Support continues for Cumbrian’s following Stoptober challenge

Health experts in Cumbria are congratulating and encouraging smokers who have reached the final 28th day of the national Stoptober challenge to keep on going.

Stoptober is a 28 day challenge for smokers from the Department of Health to do without their tobacco for October which went out to Cumbria’s estimated 87,900 smokers . And for those who didn’t make it this time, there is free local help on hand to support people stopping.

Su Sear, Public Health Partnership Specialist for NHS Cumbria said: “We congratulate those local smokers who have succeeded in the in the biggest mass quit attempt taking place in England. You now have a healthier lifestyle for you, your family and friends.

“This is proof you can enoy a healthier lifestyle and along the way you’ve saved some money.

“For those of you who didn’t managed the 28 days don’t worry because it is very hard to stop smoking - but please do have another go. Always have another go.

“You are four more times likely to be successful if you get support and that support is free and you can get it locally."

Cumbria has an estimated 87,900 smokers costing the area approximately £137.2m every year.

Stop smoking clinics are available in a range of places across Cumbria. Ask your GP,call the Stop Smoking Service on 01900 324222 to arrange, or drop in to your nearest participating pharmacy.
