Cumbria’s GP vote to hold their meetings in public

Family doctors in Cumbria have voted unanimously to hold their Full Council of Members meetings in public to ensure NHS Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) gives people the opportunity to see how decisions on health services in the county are being made.

From April 1 this year NHS Cumbria CCG became the main commissioner of NHS services in Cumbria. As a membership organisation NHS Cumbria CCG is made up of all local GP practices in the county.

At the Full Council of Members meeting held last week at Stoneybeck Inn, Penrith, Clinical Chair of NHS Cumbria CCG, Dr Hugh Reeve said: “We are required to hold an annual meeting for the members of the public to attend, but this proposal is about opening all meetings of the CCG’s full Council to the public”.

Jon Rush one of the CCG’s lay members said: “Because this is a new organisation and structure, this provides us with an opportunity to work in a new way”.

He added that holding the meetings in public was a positive way of promoting the drive to have more people involved in the running of their local NHS.

NHS Cumbria CCG Chief Officer, Nigel Maguire added: “The principle is right and the symbolism is important. It is important that we have openness, engagement and transparency.”

Members of the public will be able to attend the next Full Council of Members meeting and can also attend the Governing Body meetings, which are held in different venues across the county. Dates, times and locations for all these meetings are published on NHS Cumbria CCG’s website’s events section www.cumbriaccg.nhs.uk/news/events .
