Working towards dementia friendly communities in Cumbria

Members of the public are being invited to join health and social care professionals to help develop the Cumbria Dementia Strategy.

Organised by the NHS and Cumbria County Council, the Dementia Friendly Communities in Cumbria event is due to be held at Rheged Centre, Penrith on Tuesday, September 24.

The event will look at on-going work locally, regionally and nationally to help people live well with dementia and identify ways organisations can be more dementia friendly.

Delegates will have an opportunity to view the various stands showing a range of work and initiatives during refreshment times and at lunchtime. Places for members of the public are limited. If you are interested in attending please contact lisa.moffat@cumbria.gov.uk for a booking form.

Creating a Dementia Friendly Community aims to work towards helping people live well with dementia by looking at what can be done to improve the way that a community understands and acts on dementia and the needs of older people.

The Cumbrian event will include presentations and workshops by representatives from Cumbria County Council’s Adult and Local Services, Alzheimer’s Society, Age UK, and Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

NHS Cumbrian Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) Clinical Lead GP for Dementia, Dr Paul Atkinson said: “Everyone has a part to play in creating a Dementia Friendly Community, and the event is open to all local people, organisations, and businesses who might want to find out more about how people living with dementia and their carers can be supported in Cumbria.”

Councillor Beth Furneaux, Cumbria County Council's Cabinet member for Adult and Local Services, said: “Dementia is something that affects the lives of more and more Cumbrians.

“Creating communities where people with dementia can live life to the fullest is something we all want to see in Cumbria. To achieve this will need the involvement of everyone and I would encourage people who want to learn more to sign-up for this free event.”
