Hospice health professionals link into NHS system

Posted on Monday 8th September 2014

A new secure online system to share medical records is enabling nursing teams providing hospice service in Cumbria to link into the NHS records, to provide safer and more efficient care for their patients.

The cross Cumbria initiative called The Common Platform-EMIS Web is one of the first in the country to provide data sharing between healthcare professionals, with patient consent.

EMIS Web now links all GP practices in the county with St Mary's Hospice Ulverston, Carlisle and Eden Hospice at Home, Eden Valley Hospice, and West Cumbria Hospice at Home services. The electronic system also allows health records with the permission of the patient, to be used by community health staff from Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust to ensure patients receive the care they have requested, in the place they have chosen to be, either: home, hospice or hospital.

EMIS Web is a secure system which holds information virtually, allowing health professionals to access urgent care records where and when they are needed, in both community as well as health care buildings. District nursing teams in Carlisle and Allerdale will also be linking into the system this month (October).

NHS Cumbria CCG clinical IT lead Dr William Lumb said: "EMIS Web is enabling Cumbria to develop the Primary Care Community, ensuring patients get the care they need and request. Those wishing to be cared for at home or through the hospice services will be able to receive the same level of care as in a hospital ward, with all clinical staff being able to access their records when needed"
