Come and join the new maternity forum in South Lakeland

Posted on Tuesday 16th February 2016

NHS Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is establishing a maternity forum for users, providers and commissioners of maternity services in South Lakeland...

Maternity Matters in South Lakes (MMSL) is aiming to be a group of people that includes parents, midwives and healthcare professionals who will work together to look at the provision of maternity services in the South Lakes area and how they can influence positive changes or improvements for the benefit of local women, parents and their families.

NHS Cumbria CCG is holding an event on Thursday 23 April at The South Lakes Foyer, Yard 95a, Stricklandgate, Kendal LA9 4RA from 6pm – 7.30pm so people can just pop along to find out more about MMSL and how they can get involved.

Various healthcare professionals including midwives from the Helme Chase Maternity Unit at Westmorland General Hospital will be on hand at the event to explain the ambition for MMSL, answer questions and listen to what people have to say.

Dr Amy Lee, NHS Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group’s Lead GP in South Lakes for Children and Safeguarding, said: “Maternity Matters in South Lakes is a new forum and offers people who are passionate about maternity services an opportunity to find out more and get involved if they wish.

“We are keen to find out from the residents of South Lakeland who have actually used maternity services what went well, what could have been better and if they have any suggestions on improving services. If you want to be part of this new initiative then please come along to The South Lakes Foyer in Kendal on Thursday 23 April to find out more about Maternity Matters in South Lakes.”

Sascha Wells, Deputy Director of Midwifery at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust added: “Maternity Matters in South Lakes is going to provide women and their families, as well as other members of the public and healthcare professionals, the best opportunity to work together in the planning and provision of maternity services across Morecambe Bay maternity hospitals.  The group will be able to suggest, recommend and contribute to developments in their local services as well work with commissioners and maternity service providers to monitor progress on service changes and initiatives. They will also be able to contribute to the extensive work around the Better Care Together programme for maternity services specifically in helping to develop a fully integrated maternity care pathway.”

There are currently two other user groups nearby including Maternity Matters in Furness and Maternity Matters Lancashire North. It is envisaged that all three groups would share information and ideas due to using the same maternity services at Furness General Hospital and Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

Parents are welcome to bring their children to the event and light refreshments will be provided. To find out more information, please email angela.robinson@cumbriaccg.nhs.uk|
