More than 200 Cumbrians had their say in how health and care services could be improved during two listening events this week.
The events, on Wednesday at Morrisons superstore in Brunswick Road, Penrith and Thursday in Whitehaven Civic Hall, Lowther Street, saw more than 200 people give their views on health and care in their area of the county.
They were the first in a series of events to be held in different locations in Cumbria this month, facilitated by consumer champion for health and social care Healthwatch at the request of the local NHS.
West, North and East Cumbria face a number of local health and care challenges, including difficulties recruiting healthcare staff, access to care particularly for those in remote areas, a rising demand for healthcare services and financial challenges.
The ideas of local people are vital in addressing these challenges, and views taken at these events are being sent to the NHS organisations which are working on ways to make improvements.
Dr Stephen Singleton is medical director of the West, North and East Cumbria Success Regime, a national initiative to help the different health and care organisations in the area work together towards these improvements.
He said: “Listening to local people is a key component of the Success Regime. These drop-in programmes are the beginning of a process of engaging local people with their concerns and more importantly, their ideas about how things could and should be improved.”
