Vaccinations not necessary for flood clean up, say Public Health

Posted on Wednesday 9th December 2015

As thousands of households continue their clean up after the week’s flooding some people are approaching GPs and Pharmacies and requesting vaccinations for illnesses such as Typhoid, Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B. Cumbria Public Health is stressing that there is no need for these vaccinations or any other special post-flood vaccinations.

The public is being reminded to follow basic hygiene advice when cleaning up: wear rubber boots and gloves, protect your eyes with safety goggles and use disinfectant on soiled items. Also make sure to clean food preparation surfaces, cutlery, crockery etc. that has been contaminated with flood water prior to use.

Colin Cox, Director of Public Health, said:

“There is absolutely no need for vaccinations. The advice on cleaning items that have been soiled by floodwater is simple, straightforward and all you need to do to stay safe.”
