Cumbrian GPs rated among the best in England

Posted on Friday 31st March 2017

New research shows that Cumbria has one of the highest numbers of GP Practices in England rated as ‘outstanding’.

The Health Service Journal (HSJ) has reviewed CQC ratings across England and found that Cumbria has a higher percentage of outstanding practices than most other parts of England.

In total 69 out of Cumbria’s 73 practices have been inspected. An HSJ review of their most recent inspection assesses 17.4 per cent of practices as outstanding with 82.6 per cent rated as good.

According to the HSJ, with 17.4 per cent of Cumbrian practices rated outstanding it puts NHS Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group member practices as the highest ranked in the north.

The HSJ also names the West North and East Cumbria area as the second highest Sustainability and Transformation Plan footprint in England, with more than 17 per cent of surgeries rated as outstanding, just behind the Derbyshire STP.

Analysts from the Nuffield Trust say that top performing surgeries learn from peer led improvement and that cash investments only work if offered along with support to develop different ways of working

Caroline Rea, director of primary care for NHS Cumbria CCG said: “We know that our GP Practices are offering a consistently good service to patients, but we also understand that it is a deeply challenging time for our practices with increasing demand.

“We are supporting GPs to explore new ways of working and we have also been promoting Cumbria as a great place for GPs to live and work to try to alleviate some of the pressure where there are vacancies.

“There is no doubt that GPs in Cumbria are doing an excellent job.”

Helen Horton is NHS Cumbria CCG’s GP lead for Copeland and a partner at the outstanding Distington Practice. She said: “While we know how much pressure primary care is facing in Cumbria, we’re also very aware of how hard our GPs are working to do their best for patients. It is particularly impressive we have so many practices that are rated as good or outstanding, especially as many practices are going through so much change.

“I know from the GPs I speak to every day how focussed we all are on doing the right things for our patients and our communities, and it is really good to see this hard work recognised.”
